Welcome to Starbucks The Netherlands

Fairtrade

We have been working with Fairtrade for over 10 years but since March 1st 2010 Starbucks has been engaged in the expansion of the independent Fairtrade-certification for sustainably grown and ethically traded coffee. Our customers are therefore able to enjoy excellent, premium-quality coffee whilst at the same time making a positive difference to the living conditions of coffee farmers in the growing regions.

 Max Havelaar

Starbucks has been paying above the average coffee price for its premium-quality coffee for many years. The introduction of the Max Havelaar Fairtrade-certified Espresso Roast to The Netherlands and other European markets will enable the farmers to benefit from guaranteed minimum prices and a Fairtrade premium. This will increase to more than 2.6 million Euros per year thanks to the conversion to Fairtrade.

Espresso Roast

Espresso Roast is the basis for all espresso beverages (lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos etc.) served by Starbucks. This special blend is the core ingredient of countless beverages sold under the Starbucks brand worldwide. It is one of our top-selling whole bean coffees and harks back to the tradition of Italian coffee houses. Espresso Roast now carries the Fairtrade label, known in The Netherlands under the name Max Havelaar. The beans for this coffee come from Guatemala, Costa Rica and Peru. The plantations in these countries are the first to reap the benefits of the extended collaboration. Further producers will also be involved in the collaboration in due course.

Working with Fairtrade

Starbucks and Fairtrade work together to provide shared knowledge and best practice for sustainable coffee cultivation and trade in the growing countries. This will further improve the living conditions of the coffee farmers and will ensure the availability of top-quality, premium coffee. This collaboration also includes inspecting plantations, programs for improving coffee quality and environmental sustainability, and also providing loans to coffee farmers and cooperatives.
